The 10 Commandments of Slam Enchantment

Poets and audience members who attend Slam of Enchantment, in an effort to create a safe space for all, and to support the celebration of art, please take the time to read these “rules” of etiquette and help us build a community of love and equity.

1. Thou Shalt Speak Freely. SE is all about free speech. Feel free to say anything you want. But remember, if you say something explicitly hateful, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, etc. (i.e. Stupid) remember our audience and our host have free speech too . This is a safe space for all.

2. Thou Shalt Remember. This is a safe space for all. See above.

3. Thou Shalt Respect the Poets. This is an all ages show that invites everyone from 8 to 80, from any walk of life. Regardless of experience or style, they should be shown equal respect.

4. Thou Shalt Respect the Mic. SE absolutely encourage audiences to be active and engaged in the show, and show love to the poets. But be respectful with your comments and NO talking on the phone or holding loud conversations while the poets are on the mic.

5. Thou Shalt Urinate Appropriately. You can come (and go) as you please, but be respectful to the poets and wait to leave or go to the bathroom until the poet finishes their piece.

6. Thou Shalt Not Be a Diva. If you make a habit of being outside the entire show, coming in only to perform your poem, you are disrespecting the other poets. Yes, you may hear poems you’ve heard before. Don’t front like you ain’t got some in your set too.

7. Thou Shalt Attend Before Asking for a Feature. If you want to feature at a Slam Enchantment event, you must attend. Local poets – if you not been to an Enchantment show in 3 months, you cannot be a feature.

8. Thou Shalt Love Thy Family. We are family. At SE, the poets and the audience are family. Make like it’s Thanksgiving and love one another.

9. Thou Shalt Play Fair. Love is the rule. Sportsmanship and respect are key because new voices are born here.

10. Thou Shalt Not Dip.  Don’t be out, because you’re out. Please do not come to an SE event and then leave as soon as you’re out of the competition. It’s bad form. Respect your fellow poets enough to stay and support their art and they will do the same for you.

Above all family, we are here because we love poetry and the poets who write it. Show that love. Be love. Have fun!
